Recap of the Western Canadian Karting Championships.

Round 1 May 2010

R3 Karting Birel gave me the opportunity this past May to run in the largest Rotax Race in Western Canada after being out of the sport for over 2 years. I still love karting and anything to do with racing so I could not refuse the invite.

With zero testing in a kart, we found ourselves up to speed quickly in the 30+ kart field from across the Nation. Friday we were atop the charts in practice (we were ecstatic that we could jump in and be competitive with the high quality drivers in Canada’s karting scene today).

Come race day we qualified  put the R3 Birel Rotax MAX kart in the 10th spot of the 31 kart field, not what we were hoping for but we were in striking distance.

Qualifying was in the dry but the rain hammered down before the Pre-Final. Full wet setups went into everyone’s karts and we rifled through the field ending the prefinal in the fourth position.

Starting the final outside row 2 at Greg Moore Raceway, we made our way up to second place in the once again dry race. The top 5 drivers broke away from the rest and we battled out for the entire race, swapping positons back and forth. At the end of the day we finished 5th out of a 31 kart field, we were happy to be in the mix and show that we still had what it took a couple years out of the sport.

I look forward to getting back behind the wheel of a kart when I can!
